Beyond the Unwasted

Eric Klarenbeek and Maartje Dros collaborate on R&D and design projects since 2014, striving for local new economies and production chains, material development and durable design objects. For there pro-jects they connect universities, high-tech companies as well as farmers with local producers.

The Mycelium Project started with the creation of the Mycelium Chair (NL, 2010), which was published and exhibited extensively and resulted in the founding of a company for mycelium based products named Krown (NL, 2017). Also the studio worked on the development of biopolymers from local sources, 3D Bakery (NL, 2015), AMS ‘Circular Supply Chain for the City’ (NL, 2016) and the Algae Lab at Luma, Arles (FR, 2017), resulting in Algae based products by integrating durable and sustainable production meth-ods. Mijn naam is Jessica de Hartog, ik ben materiaal ontwerpster, en creëer nieuwe grafische objecten vanuit plastic afval voor aan jouw muur. Ik transformeer plastic van afval tot een esthetisch materiaal voor mensen die geloven in een duurzame maatschappij. Zij die streven naar een verandering in grondstoffen en het gebruiken van materialen. Ieder die zijn steentje aan deze nieuwe manier van leven wilt bijdragen.

Door vooral verder te denken tijdens het onderzoek en het maakproces ontstaat een experiment met materiaal, kleur en techniek. Al sinds mijn studie heb ik een fascinatie voor plastic. Met name de kleurvariatie is belangrijk voor mij. Ik recycle al jaren, op kleine schaal, mijn eigen plastic per soort en kleur en heb hieruit mijn eigen grondstof gecreëerd. Deze grondstof verwerk ik tot mijn kleur en materialenbibliotheek ReColored, dat continue wordt aangevuld. Elk sample staat op zichzelf als kunstwerk en heeft de waarde om verder ontwikkeld te worden tot een groter bestaan. Met als doel jou te inspireren dat wegwerpplastic niet zou mogen bestaan. Samen gaan wij de toekomst van waardevolle grondstoffen genereren.

Hoe creëer ik bijzondere en hoogwaardige nieuwe producten uit afgedankte restmaterialen? Dat was de vraag die Marc Meijers, industrieel ontwerper uit Maastricht, zich jaren geleden stelde en waarvoor hij, met zijn uitgebreide kennis van materialen en productietechnieken, gepassioneerd op zoek ging naar oplossingen. ‘Ons eerste succes betrof een uniek plaatmateriaal van gerecyclede jeans met een bio-based kunststof waarbij de typische indigokleur en de oorspronkelijke vezels zichtbaar bleven. Met een speciale techniek kan deze plaat vervolgens worden geperst tot 3-dimensionale producten, zoals stoelen, lampen, koffers en nog veel meer’.

Dit vormde de basis voor de onderneming DenimX waarbij het ontwikkelen van circulaire producten, gemaakt van gerecyclede reststromen de kernactiviteit vormt. Grote bedrijven en instellingen als Nike, Dyneema, Gispen, Ministerie van Defensie en Dienst Justitiële Inrichting wisten de weg naar DenimX te vinden.

The Jan van Eyck Academie welcomes Giulia Bellinetti, recently appointed as Coordinator of the Nature Research department and runner of the Future Materials Lab.
Previously, she was Coordinator of the Production Department at the M HKA, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Antwerp. In this experience, she engaged with a wide range of art practices gaining a nuanced understanding of the cognitive, affective, and material configurations underlying contemporary art production. In recent years, Giulia has become increasingly interested in the ecological discourse in relation to contemporary art, institutional work and interdisciplinary forms of collaborations. She is currently conducting a PhD research project on the epistemic function of art institutions in the age of ecological crisis at the Amsterdam School of Cultural Analysis (University of Amsterdam).

I am an alumnus of Design Academy Eindhoven and a recent addition to the Yksi Young Talent Team, where I curate and plan the exhibitions. I also work on my graduation project Beachcombers where I craft objects from dumped fishing nets.
The dialogue between humans and their surroundings has been at the core of my design interest, particularly the tools that we invent to respond to changing times and the frictions that arise from applying them. I explore those frictions in multiple media, play with their meanings, and gather them them into narratives, both real and fictional. I am a treasure-hunter-gatherer who simultaneously tries to redefine what the ‘treasure’ is.

Leonne Cuppen is de drijvende kracht achter Yksi Connect. Zij verbindt ontwerpers met de industrie, biedt inspiratie, geeft richtingen aan en legt vraagstukken bloot. Daarnaast cureert en realiseert Yksi Connect tentoonstellingen over duurzaam en circulair design die te zien zijn in Nederland en ver daarbuiten. Leonne was mede initiatiefnemer van wat nu de Dutch Design Week is, waar zij nog steeds mee verbonden is. Ook is ze burgerlid / duurzaamheids expert van de commissie Ruimtelijke Kwaliteit Eindhoven. Daarnaast is Leonne initiator van het platform Yksi Expo, waar momenteel het meerjarig programma Rethinking Plastic te zien is. We moeten anders gaan denken over plastic als materiaal en er anders mee omgaan. In die noodzakelijke transitie spelen ontwerpers een cruciale rol.

Nancy Bocken is Professor in Sustainable Business at Maastricht University, Maastricht Sustainability Institute, the Netherlands. Her research topics include sustainable business models, business experiments for sustainability, Circular Economy, sufficiency and closing the 'idea-action' gap for sustainability. Nancy’s most recent research project is Circular X, an ambitious €1.5m, five-year research project funded by the European Research Council about experimentation with circular business models. Nancy is also academic lead of the new joint Master’s in Sustainable Business in Maastricht together with York University. Nancy is also Fellow at Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership and co-founded her own circular and sustainable business called HOMIE. She holds a PhD from the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, which was fully funded by Unilever

Na een studie politicologie en communicatiewetenschap aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, ben ik bijna 15 jaar werkzaam als marketing-adviseur bij de gerenommeerde internationale adviesnetwerken BBDO, Y&R en TBWA, alwaar ik vele, grote (inter)nationale merken adviseerde.
In 2006 loop ik vast met mijn maatschappelijk geëngageerde ethiek in het conventionele bedrijfsleven. Het lukt me niet langer om te werken voor bedrijven die alleen maar bezig zijn zichzelf te verrijken; ten koste van de planeet en/of mensheid. Ik beslis dan ook om ontslag te nemen, te verhuizen naar een klein dorpje in Drenthe, en mijn kennis en kunde op het gebied van business development voortaan alleen nog maar te gebruiken om de wereld te verbeteren. Ik gebruik daarbij mijn boeddhistische levensbeschouwing als actieve inspiratiebron. Vandaar dat mijn bedrijf Karmanomics heet.

The Artist and the Others is an initiative based on the importance of arts for our society and the benefit of shared knowledge. The foundation, initiated in 2013, supports young artists and cultural professionals during their career in the cultural field.

Our goal is to overcome the difficulties that artists and cultural professionals encounter in the first years after their studies, a critical period when they need to establish connections, and develop the knowledge and necessary skills to boost their future career.

Inspired by Dave Hakkens and the global Precious Plastic community, we began setting up our very own plastic recycling workspace in Maastricht. Starting in 2019 as a student-led initiative, we’re now becoming an established foundation.
At Precious Plastic Maastricht we collect and recycle plastic waste (only PP and HDPE), involve the local community in sustainability and material discussions, and build machines to make all this possible. Our recycling machines are often used as an educational tool in workshops. By showing everyone how plastic waste is recycled into valuable new products, we aim to raise awareness that plastic waste can be a precious resource.
